3D-printed observatory

Build your own observatory and discover the secrets of the cosmos

Mini telescope

It does not have to be the 8 inch (200 mm) Newton reflector to make first astronomical observations. Our mini telescope in combination with a simple C-mount camera, like the "Rasperry Pi HQ" camera, already allows to take good pictures of sunspots as well as moon craters. But the telescope can also be used terrestrially. Almost all components can be printed quickly and easily and assembled in just a few steps. For the optics, you only need an achromat (2-lens) with a diameter of 31 mm and a focal length of 135 mm, which can be found easily and cheaply at several dealers on the net.

The telescope requires:

  • 3D printed components
  • Achromatic lens (diameter 31 mm, focal length 135 mm)
  • One M4 nut and M4x20 bolt

Component overview

Base mount

The following files must be downloaded and printed for the mini-telescope:

  • Telescope-Lensframe.stl (Lens holder to clamp the lens)
  • Telescope-Tube.stl (Optical tube, also for clamping the lens in the lens holder)
  • Telescope-Focuswheel.stl (the focusing wheel is rotatably mounted on the tube by means of the connecting element)
  • Telescope-Focusconnector.stl (connecting element between tube and focusing wheel)
  • Telescope-Wheelinset.stl(Insert for the focusing wheel and connecting element to the camera end piece)_
  • Telescope-Camerapart.stl (Camera end piece, for mounting a camera sensor with 1.25" socket)

Telescope attachments/accessories

WARNING Never observe the sun without a fully functional, firmly seated and undamaged solar filter. A suitable attachment is available from the accessories.

  • Telescope-FrameSunfilter.stl _(Plug-in attachment for mounting a solar filter foil in front of the achromatic lens)
